Like about the Martin 0018VS UMGF: Very intimate guitar. Yes, playing on the couch is much more comfortable than with a dreadnought. I also like the very warm tone, with plenty of midrange (and still having sufficient highs). Did not expect so much volume (although several people already mentioned this). I opted for the Amberburst version and I am very glad I did that! Flawless finish of everything. Nice fine herringbone and quilted hog. I always wanted a vintage Martin, but this guitar really gives me a vintage feeling (with its slothead, small size and sound).
Dislike about the Martin 00-18VS (UMGF): If there was something I would have wanted to change it would be the mod V-profile neck. But I am getting used to it now. And the tuners: I think the Waverly's with Ivoroid knob would have been a great choice. But all in all the 00-18 UMGF is a great design.
Additional Comments: This guitar is not just limited to fingerstyle. I was very surprised that this baby does chord strumming very well too.

Liked about the Martin 00-18VS UMGF: Beautiful look and comfort factor is high. Excellent fingerstyle guitar especially for lowered tunings.
Disliked about the Martin 00-18VS UMGF: Martin Pickguard.
Additional Comments: Love this baby down in C tuning. Ivory saddle, tusq pins, Martin FS mediums PB strings.

Liked about the Martin 00-18VS: its playability with the 1 3/4" nut and modified V neck, the distinctive voice - balanced, rich, pure - and the small size. Incredible tone from such a small guitar
Disliked about the Martin 00-18VS: I can't think of anything I dislike about it.
Additional Comments: I'm happy I was a part of this project, and the UMGF guitar is one of my favorites. Especially nice for noodling around on the sofa late in the evening. Great for accompaniment or fingerstyle solos. Buying it from Maury made the whole experience perfect. The guitar arrived prefectly set up and sounding its best.
City/ State: Brooklyn, NY Date: 11/09/2004 Review: Martin 00-18VS UMGF Rating: 5 - Best thing I ever bought Liked about the Martin 00-18VS: Looks - this guitar could be the "Vintage" Martin poster child. The understated elegance of the slotted headstock, quilted mahogany back/sides, and herringbone top inlay are a feast for the eyes. I removed my pickguard immediately, and have never looked back.
Tone/volume - the projection and tone are such that you believe you're listening to a much larger guitar. This is one of the few smaller-bodied guitars that doesn't sound small or closed in.
Feel - the 1-3/4" neck and short scale length make this guitar a perfect "curling-up-on-the-couch" guitar, but it's big voice can easily be put on stage as well.
Disliked about the Martin 00-18VS: The anticipation of having to wait for Martin to build these was the only downside. I also wished I had ordered mine with the pickup installed in the case pocket instead of on the top.
Additional Comments: Mine wears a bone saddle and TUSQ pins, and is strung with medium Martin SP Phosphors. Great combination!! I'm thinking about putting a pickup in mine.

Disliked about the Martin 00-18VS: Slotted headstock. (I ordered mine with a solid one. Had a chance to a/b it with slotted version of same, and could not detact any difference in sound, but string changes take less time!)

Liked about the Martin 00-18VS: Slotted headstock oozes mojo; Waverly tuners are a joy. Quilted mahogany is serious eye candy and produces a clear, punchy tone. Plenty of volume and sustain from the 12-fret body. Much louder than you'd expect from a small-body 00.
Disliked about the Martin 00-18VS: Nada. It was exactly what I thought I wanted when I ordered and it continues to live up to my expectations (and then some) every day.
Additional Comments: Don't believe the troll(s) who says "Save your money." That's a load of crap. This is the best little guitar, dollar for dollar, that you can buy today.
