Likes: tone, tone, tone! sounds like a martin, i have it set up to play like butter. it does in fact have a truss rod, after 2006 they are deep in the hole, you need a 5 inch wrench to get to it.
Dislikes: not a big fan of the fishman pickup, but that's really just nitpicking. this guitar is outstanding for the money. no binding or inlays, so it's no frills, no shiny bells and whistles, but just beautiful martin tone.
Additional Comments: i'm mostly an electric player, so this is more acoustic guitar than i'll ever need. solid spruce top, loud and full. buy one.

Likes: This guitar was ready to play right away. Sounds great and holds it's tune even when left in the case for a week or more. I must add that it's difficult to leave it in it's case for a week because it's so sweet to play! And only $499? Unreal...
Dislikes: No truss rod? How can that be? A Martin mis-step for sure.
Additional Comments: Nothing fancy with this guitar but it is a nice one for sure.
Comment from Maury's Music: Hi Straydog. Thanks for your review. There is actually a truss rod in that guitar, it is recessed pretty far and the old pre-2006 wrench won't reach it. Click here for the truss rod you need.

Likes: Huge Martin sound, great guitar for the price, stealth electronics, sounds fantastic!
Dislikes: None. But wouldn't mind inlaid fret markers and some binding for looks, but not necessary
Additional Comments: I played all kind of guitars for 2-3 months and finally purchased an all solid wood D16GT. I didn't care for the sound when I got it home and returned it - went out with a fresh outlook 2 weeks later and this $500 model spoke to me...it felt right and had the Martin sound I was after. Now I have had it for a few days and I'm getting used to it. The sound is stunning. Forget it's an entry level guitar!

Likes: The sound and punch this guitar delivers. The price!
Dislikes: No purfling,no binding and no inlay dots on fretboard.
Additional Comments: If you like bling then this may not be the guitar for you. Perhaps its beauty is in its simplicity. I admire its purity. No glitz, just raw power.

Likes: tone, action, solid build
Dislikes: none
Additional Comments: $499 for a great playing and great sounding guitar and its a Martin! Don't waste your money on those other Martins, this one sounds just as good as any other Martin at fraction of the cost, unless you like blowing money on spec's?

Likes: The voice, the sound, the feel!
Dislikes: Absolutely nothing!
Additional Comments: I have been playing for about 5 years now and my Martin handles the Old Time Fiddle Music as easily as it does when accompanying lighter fare. This is a wonderful "entry level" guitar to the world of Martins. Every other guitar in its class pales in comparison.

Likes: Formica last a long time and sounds very good. Sound is created by the enclosure and the DX1 has the acoustic enclosure to get loud and clean sound. All you need to do is adjust the action to your playing stile, if any.
Dislikes: none
Additional Comments: You can't do better for the money. You need to set it up for your playing style.

Likes: The sound, the price, the no frills look, and again the sound. I'm actually purchasing the 12 string model D12X1 this week. hope it plays as well as this one.
Dislikes: Nothing so far.
Additional Comments: I played many guitars in the past 39 years of serious playing including a friends D 41 special. In it's price range nothing sounded as good. It needed no setup. It played great right off the rack. I don't understand what some others are saying about it being a waste of money other than the fact they must have received a bad one. Best bang for the buck here.

Like about the Martin DX1: Had the DX1 for 7 years now and the only problem is the frets are worn. This guitar has GREAT volume for flatpicking and being heard over the banjos and mandolins!
Dislikes: for the price--none
Additional Comments: I have been playing for 40 years and had many high end acoustics. I put bone bridge pins, bone saddle and a john pearse arm rest so the top would vibrate more. I never have a problem being heard in a bluegrass jam!

Like about the Martin DX1: Has a great sound for the price. I have played over a dozen guitars priced at 500 - 1500 bucks, and the only one's that sounded better were both Martin D-15's. I have played a lot of "solid wood" guitars priced under a thousand. Do not waste money on a bargain "solid wood" guitar, whether an epiphone, A & L, Washburn or otherwise. They do not sound as good as this cheap-jack, low end Martin.
Dislikes: Does not sound as good as my D-15, so i don't play it all that much. Set up from factory was too high, but my luthier fixed it.
Additional Comments: The neck feels very stiff, but I've had the truss rod adjusted twice, which has made the guitar very playable, and totally buzz and hum-free.

Like about the Martin DX1: Martin Dreadnought for $499, Made in USA, Amazing sound, Good tone, playing action was perfect. No setup needed!
Dislike about the Martin DX1: Back and sides are not solid wood so the aging process is unknown. Some of these models are made in Mexico. Look in the soundhole and make sure it's made in USA!
Additional Comments: You must baby this guitar!!! Keep it in a good case and always be aware of weather elements!
Martin and other Mfgs hide the peg head of the truss rod.

Like about the Martin DX1: Looks good for the price. Sounds good.
Dislike about the Martin DX1: Neck has NO TRUSS ROD so it becomes hard to fret. My guitar shop could not set it up, called it "A PIECE OF JUNK". The hole for the truss rod is there but is empty.
Additional Comments: I was refunded the full purchase price but was very disappointed in Martin for producing such poor quality. Have it checked for a truss rod before you spend your time and money.

Like about the Martin DX1: This is a fantastic sounding guitar at a very affordable price! It's a Martin and sounds like a Martin. What more can you ask? Don't be scared of the Plain Jane looks. It's a great guitar and a super buy!
Dislike about the Martin DX1: Absolutely nothing!
Additional Comments: It's a Martin. Get one.

Like about the Martin DX1: Great set up out of the box.String height at 12th fret 3/32in neck set right on. Workman ship clean,no flaws.
Dislike about the Martin DX1: NO dislikes for the price you get a plain acoustic with the Martin sound which is worth giving up the bling.
Additional Comments: First Martin I've own Blueridge,Alvarez and Carolina. Hands down best quality even in there low end model. No set up work required great just as it was shipped from Martin. No quality drop off because these are made in Mexico in fact I played a DX1 that was USA made I like the fret board of the new model better. No more China made acoustics I will be buying a Martin 000 soon.

Like about the Martin DX1: It says the word "Martin" on the headstock
Dislike about the Martin DX1: What a trouble infested ugly piece of trash. Sounds like cardboard and Martin does NOT back the warrantee on this thing.
Additional Comments: I had warratee work done on this boat oar 3 times and it still was not right. Fret Buzz! 12 fret neck hump! I sold the piece of junk and bought a Seagull!!!
