Tascam makes practicing fun!
Even for me.
By Maury Rutch
Maury's Music opened its doors in 2003, and we quickly became known as the place to go for the very best in acoustic guitars. We're proud to be one of the country's top Martin Guitar dealers, and our customers know that we only carry "the good stuff". For 2006 we've decided it was time to enter the world of home recording gear, and we're sticking to the same formula - just the good stuff. Naturally this means Tascam.
When I began playing guitar at age 14, I became immediately obsessed with the instrument. It became my life. By the time I was 18 I knew the only way I would ever go through more school (I absolutely hated high school) was if it centered around music. But I didn't want to become a music teacher, or give lessons. No. I wanted to know how to record it. Fast-forward to 1990. I enrolled in the Art Institute of Philadelphia's Music & Video program, where they crammed 3 years of school into 2 years of classes - very cool already! I graduated in 1992 with a serious knowledge of film, radio, video, and last but not least - audio recording. Woohooo! So I've had my eye on Tascam for all their cool recording gear (which we also carry, by the way) but my rep turned me on to this other new product that I hadn't heard about . Tascam portable CD trainers.
My first reaction was "nah - scratch that & give me 4 more 8-track recorders" but he gave me the scoop. These neat little CD players are quite handy. When I sit in with my friend's band, I always have to learn a few new songs. No big deal - I just go to the living room, pop the CD in, tune up, and play my strat unplugged along with the song. I don't have FX or any tone, but I'm lazy. I'm sure not gonna lug my amp into the room, plug it in, dial in my tone.. sheesh this is why I'm not IN a band . I hate to practice LOL. OK, next song. Re-tune my guitar, find the CD remote (I just had it a minute ago). grrrrrr. But wait! Those days are over ☺
Now we have the Tascam CD-GtmkII. Let's try this again. Pop the CD into the CD trainer. Plug my strat into the CD trainer. Tune the CD to my strat. Go back to the solo, slow down the speed without changing the pitch. Hit "loop" so the solo repeats infinitely "till I've nailed it. Oh yeah, and get a kiss on the cheek from my wife - ?cause I'm not in the living room with my amp and her CD player ;) I'm in the next room with headphones on!
The CD-GtmkII is a pretty remarkable box, when you consider how many headaches it solves. Next time I have to learn a new tune for Nick's band, or figure out the 2nd solo to Wooden Ships, I won't make Lori listen to it through our home stereo over and over and over again - I'll whip out my CD trainer. 2 thumbs up, Tascam!
