Rating you give the Martin HD28: 5 - Best thing I ever played

Likes: I bought my HD-28 new in 2004.  It gets better every year.  Wonderfully balanced deep tone and great note separation.
This is by far my favorite guitar.  I wouldn't trade it for any other guitar.

Dislikes: I would prefer Waverly open back tuners.

Additional Comments: I use Martin MSP7200 strings.  If this guitar was lost, I would order another tomorrow.

Likes: The tone is amazing. There aren't many guitars that sound like Martins. The cosmetics of this guitar are also amazing. I played a D-28 and an HD-28 at a local store. The HD-28 sounded better and looked better to me.

Dislikes: Martin ships HD-28's with medium gauge strings. I use custom lights on my guitars. It is probably best to have Maury set it up for you with the strings that you are used to playing.

Additional Comments: Even with a shipping upgrade, I saved about $950 over what I could buy it locally. I would definitely recommend Maury's Music to anyone who is interested in buying a Martin guitar. I ordered the guitar on Tuesday, and I was playing it Friday afternoon in Florida.

Likes: Fast feeling neck. Nice and loud. Feels and looks modern. Best sounding guitar even when compared to vintage and golden era stuff.

Dislikes: Nothing

Additional Comments: The D-28, HD-28V, D-28GE, and D-28 Authentic are like the old Batman. The HD-28 is like Batman Beyond if you know what I'm talking about. It is Batman but updated for more versatility and while keeping tradition. This is the 21st century guitar no doubt about it. And is very powerful!!!

Likes: Loud! Strong Bass! Rich sound! Built nicely. Elegant design. When strummed it can can shake your guts. Not all HD-28s are this powerful so pick wisely my friend. I actually think this guitar is making me dead because it is so darn loud.

Dislikes: I would complain that this guitar is the worst thing that happened to me! I dislike it since I spent 6 hours straight last night playing it. I am addicted!!!!!!!! It is that GOOOOD

Additional Comments: Best Martin. I actually hate the authentic golden era vintage stuff because it all looks fake to my eye. The HD-28 is the peak of the best Modern Martin in production! Very nice. The HD-28s made after 2009 seem to be better to me. I actually prefer these new HD-28s to any 1950's - present D-28 and 1976-2009 HD-28. I think Martin is using some really good East Indian supply. The HD-28 is the classic acoustic guitar. I was going to buy a D-28 Marquis, but I could not justify the price increase. I never see professional musicians use anything that up in the Martin line. Some of the best guitar players ever used this exact model the HD-28 not the standard D-28, HD-28V, D-28 Marquis, or a D-28 Authentic. This is the crown jewel of all guitars being made now and this is as good as it gets. I also looked at the D-18 (2012) before picking up a HD-28 to buy. It is a nice guitar, but is weak sauce compared to the big daddy rosewood HD-28. Oh my I think I am going to play mine right now :)

Likes: Best sounding guitar!!! Sounds like a grand piano!!!!!! Basically a travel size grand piano

Dislikes: Nothing this is pretty much the guitar I plan to keep forever and ever

Additional Comments: I admit some of the HD-28s I have played are not up to par.  I traveled across the country for a year and would visit music stores and play every acoustic.  I liked the HD-28s more than the HD-28V, D-35, HD-35, or anything in the 40 series and above with the abalone. T urns out my HD-28 was not 1,000 miles away from home.  It was at a store 30 minutes from my home. Got to open up the sealed box and case tuned the guitar strummed and I felt the POWER.  This guitar is like having a Ferrari!!!  Ford and Toyata are the other guitar makers they get the job done but not up to par to this guitar.  The HD-28 is like the high performance car from Ferrari.  The power is definitely in this guitar.  The cool thing is that this guitar is a BASS monster.  When I strum this guitar with a pick the bass response is so massive that the windows in my house shake.  And this is playing unplugged!  I doubt few HD-28s are like mine.  I actually think this HD-28 I own is probably the most unique ever produced both visually and sound.  Hope this guitar stays in the family even after I am long gone.  There are pre-war Martin D-28s with forward scalloped bracing that sound poorly to this guitar I have.  The wood on this HD-28 is both striking visually and in tone.  Best guitar I ever played!!!!

Likes: Everything this is the flagship of the Martin line... Every acoustic guitarist wants this guitar.

Dislikes: That it was made by CF Martin the first......

Additional Comments: My HD-28 sounded better than the new D-18 (2012), D-28, and the new guitar in the shop the HD-28V.  The owner of the shop has been playing Martins for over 40 years and has been working as a salesman since he was a teenager.  He told me he actually hates the HD-28V... T he neck is too bulky and the sound is off.  The shop owner also said you can pay me more and walk out of here with the more expensive HD-28V, but I am going to be honest with you the HD-28s are the best guitars Martin makes.  And I have to agree with that myself.  Perfect all rounder

Likes: Sounds like a D-28 that has a lot of extra magic! Makes the D-28 sound thin and empty sounding. I was a D-28 fan and hated the HD-28s at first because i saw they basically had similar specs but have around a $500 retail price difference, but the HD-28 and its scalloped braces sound like HEAVEN! Sounds good in all venues. Sounds like a Grand Piano. I agree with other reviews that the HD-28V is too dark and kind of dull and I think not as loud as the HD-28. The HD-28 really is the pop rock and roll/ Folk country guitar for a young gun player. HD-28V is the Martin a conservative senior AARP member. I am definitely a HD-28 type of guy because a HD-28V only sounds good if you are playing by yourself trying to yodel like you were you were on the stage of the grand ole opry in..... The 1940's.... The HD-28 has a much more modern vibe and feel to it. The neck on the HD-28 feels more comfortable and allows for faster chord changes compared to the V that can cramp your hand. HD-28's case is really light and easy to transport from club to club bar to bar compared to the HD-28V my grandpa has. The 28V geib case is a pain to carry around for a working musician since its actually pretty heavy and not practical for a working musician. The HD-28 actually sounds better than a straight braced D-28 that has opened up and visually looks superior compared to the old standard boring D-28. HD-35 is comparable to the HD-28, but I think they are too weird and bassy... Though the 3 piece backs look beautiful if the right pieces of wood are used. The HD-28 i got has the classic book match back East Indian rosewood. The one I got has a red coloring too it too so it actually looks a lot and I mean a lot like Brazilian rosewood guitars. I actually sometimes think the back wood on this guitar is not actually East Indian rosewood because it has these weird little designs in it that look exotic and not the traditional East Indian coloring perhaps I was lucky to have my guitar made out of a magic East Indian rosewood tree that thought it would try to look and be like Brazilian lol. I doubt this wood is Brazilian, but looks so unique. I can pinpoint my guitar at jam sessions by just looking at the back of the guitar so I doubt I will lose this guitar and end up picking up someone else's HD-28 since this wood looks so odd and exotic

Dislikes: I wish the guitar was Brazilian rosewood.... But that's everyone's dream that is a guitar fan. Too bad collectors are hogging up the Brazilian stuff right now and a lot of collectors buying the stuff up do not know how to play the guitar besides the G and C chords...

Additional Comments: HD-28 is the best standard series guitar Martin makes. Basically every single one I have picked up is good, but the one I have is a Killer guitar. My neighbors complain about it and my family hates this guitar because they say it is too loud hahahahahaha. I had my brother play my HD-28 inside my living room with all windows closed while I stood on the other side of the street to my house and I could hear the guitar perfectly and I could hear my brother playing wildwood flower and blackbird just fine..... This guitar is a honor to own! Thank you mr. Martin and all the guitar gods for blessing me with such a magnificent instrument. I have already wrote a few nice songs with my HD-28. Now all my other guitars sit in their cases including my vintage fenders and Gibsons I have collected over the years. The only guitar I still play with the HD-28 is a 1946 D-18 my grandfather bought after returning from the war. The D-18 sounds excellent and is worth over 10 grand now, but for a fraction of the price the HD-28 I have is actually louder, but lacks the mahogany clarity.

Likes: Loud! Clean look and perfect for solo gigs. Better than other Martins, Gibsons, or Taylors. Is the best Martin in production. This guitar will the kick the snot out if other guitars that dare challenge it including forward braced guitars that are just mushy in sound

Dislikes: Absolutely nothing just can't beat quality

Additional Comments: This guitar smells good!

Likes: Got a chance to check out the Martin dealer nearby. Sat down in a room by myself with 2 D-28s, 3 HD-28s, and 2 HD-28Vs. The winners were clearly the HD-28. The D-28 sounds too weak since it is limited by straight braces. The HD-28V is very woody and would sound great only for a tiny percentage of music. This being music leaning towards deep country solo performing, but sounds DEAD.... The HD-28s shined and vibrated through my body and I felt like the sound of the guitar was standing in front of me. I expected the HD-28V to be the best, but I am disappointed. The HD-28V is just a the guitar that a retired man like my father gravitates to with its old beat up look and dark bland sound perfect for a solo couch performance of the honky tonk days of yesteryear. My dad has the HD-28V and likes it, but that's a guy who still listens to music on a record player still and has never sent an email in his life.... The HD-28 has the classic Martin thump, but the overtones are better and highs are able to shine through too and spice up the music. The HD-28 would be the guitar choice of the up and coming next artist to take his/her place next to Presley, Cash, Snow, Haggard, Jones, Dylan, Williams, and the other legends. The HD-28 is the peak of modern guitar making. Also, the general public's ear and taste in the 21st century is definitely in tune with the standard HD-28. Due to people gravitating to a guitar that has history, but has a modern sound which is what the HD-28 is. I took a college class and the professor explained the modern sound people like to listen to in the 21st century. The old time dry sound that guitars like the HD-28V's dry tone and sound are a thing of the past. This dry sound the V represents is exactly what Nashville tried to get away from with the Nashville Sound with pioneers like Chet Atkins trying to make sure the dry tone got replaced with a more alive modern sound and that's the Nashville sound, which modern music is based on. The HD-28V would work best as playing traditional country pre-1950 (pre-Nashville sound or rockabilly). The HD-28 has a crystal glass sound that is in recordings now and is what people are looking for. The D-28 offers this pleasing pitch, but it is much more tame since its braces are not scalloped, but would be a good choice in bluegrass. Mumford and Sons uses the D-28, but they have have so many diverse traditional instruments that a guitar with scalloped braces is not needed since only a more fundamental sound is needed and it works for them since the rich tone of scalloped models can be replaced with other instruments filling the audio landscape.

I definitely believe the greatest acoustic recordings are going to be achieved on the HD-28 during this generation and not the D-28 or HD-28V. I classify the standard D-28 as the bluegrass lead guitar if it has opened up from a few years of good honest playing. The HD-28V as the guitar a man that has lived a long time and enjoys music before rock and roll. The HD-28 is the pop artist groovy rock and roll guitar. If you dream of reaching Elvis Presley's fame this is the guitar to shake your hips too and sing "Hound Dog" like a 1950's Elvis with the screaming girls. The Elvis Presley Martin D-28 used the same bracing and design of the HD-28 too and represents and honors a music legend in such a beautiful sound. The HD-28 is a tribute to tradition honoring the D-28 players of the herringbone pre-war era and the post-war rock and roll stars and folk revivalist. The HD-28 is the guitar in Martins line that takes its influences from the past and preparing for the future. The D-28 lacks a nod to the pre-war sound/appointments and the Vintage HD-28V only honors the pre-war sound failing to acknowledge the great music that occurred after the herringbones were replaced initially. The standard HD-28 combines these great moments over the 20th century and takes a leap forward to the future of popular music. I can see the next star in the dressing room strapping on a HD-28 onto his shoulder and walking onto stage with thousands of screaming fans. And when he strums his first chord he will be honoring every martin player and lover of all eras while creating a new legacy to leave for the next generation.

Dislikes: The only change I would make is having a guitar strap shipped with guitar. Guitar action from factory is too high and will be noticed during marathon jams. Once a good setup happens OH Boy now you are in business!

Additional Comments: HD-28 is the best value in Martins line and is the choice of a serious musician. If you believe you can leave a legacy behind get this guitar. D-28s and HD-28Vs are good, but not made to produce a modern sound.

Likes: is better each and every time I play it. I take it to every show, and gets the typical battle scars. i believe this day and age to be the "golden era' for Martin.

Dislikes: Not a fan of the plastic case, leaves little space for supplies, capo, strings, ect.

Additional Comments: this is still the cloth that all of others were cut from, even Collings cut some of these open to see what made the tick.

Likes: This is by far the best guitar I have played. It is superior to any guitar I have played. My Gibsons sound like toy guitars now. I can't pass the case of the guitar without opening it up and playing. Also, the one I got is just beautiful the Rosewood was just perfection.

Dislikes: NOTHING!!!! This guitar is the real DEAL!!!! Those that say that you are crazy for buying this guitar are just JEALOUS! This guitar is perfect. A person will have to play multiple HD-28's to find the one they love. Luckily I found the one I love. I bet Maury or any other dealer will be willing to send you pictures and audio to make sure you are getting the guitar of your dreams.

Additional Comments: I don't think I will buy another guitar. This is just perfection. The standard D-28 sounds like a wimp to the HD-28. The HD-28V is good, but lacks the perfect mix of old and modern like the HD-28. BUY this guitar only if you can actually Play really good and do the guitar justice. This guitar is the major league guitar. I have already been offered a recording contract after having this guitar for around a month now. This guitar changed my life.

Likes: It sounded excellent out of the box. Sounded almost as good as my 1944 D-28 I have had since I was 19.  Martin really created something great with this model when it's new.

Dislikes: I bought the HD-28 in 1994 I believe.  Now in 2013 it has finally died out on me.  The guitars tone is just awful now.  The thing is loud and out of control.  The sound of this guitar now being this old is like having a group of people with low and high voices screaming.  Just isn't pretty.  If you are going to buy a quality guitar that will last forever buy a D-28 made before 1960.

Additional Comments: Wish the HD-28 kept its awesome sound.  Just didn't age right even though I babied it with the right humidity.  Look for the old stuff or buy a Standard D-28.

Additional Comments: Love this guitar and you can delete my previous review because this guitar deserves now to have a 5 star rating from me.

Likes: The D-28 is the standard-bearer of acoustic flat tops.
Possibly the most versatile acoustic guitar ever built. I believe Martin's primary goal has always been to assure consistency of materials and craftsmanship that produces reliable and repeatable sound model to model

Dislikes: Nothing worth mentioning comes to mind.

Additional Comments: Unless you opt for a Collins or Santa Curz at twice the price, nothing can really match the sound of an HD-28 for the price. As testimony to this, it seems the majority of other guitar comparisons are matched up against Martin's because Martin is the standard.

Likes: This guitar is a dream to play and although it sounds like I am tooting my own horn this guitar *DOES* make my voice sound better. I have been told for years that I have a good voice; but I don't know what it is about this particular guitar; but it makes me sound better then I have ever sounded and even those that have listened to me sing before have asked if I have been taking singing lessons; because of how much better my voice sounds when singing while accompanying myself with my 2006 HD28.

Dislikes: That I didn't buy this sooner.

Additional Comments: I use to have an electric 1963 Duo-Sonic Fender and a Gibson ES335 with gold plated vibrato and neither of those made my voice sound half as good as this one does.

Likes: Great bass and nice bright highs. I changed strings to 12's and sound was better. A little less muddy for a new guitar. Bonus was the action was even a tad lower. Spot on intonation! I checked every fret with a digital tuner. Perfect factory set up..
It will be a real canon when it opens up.

Dislikes: Don't get to play my other guitars much anymore! And I loved my old 1966 Gibson J-50 I have had since new!

Additional Comments: Maury has the best price in the country from what I could find...

Additional Comments: Had my HD28 only 6 months, it was new and had to send back to Nazareth for repair. Bracing on the top of the guitar was coming apart. They told me 12 to 14 weeks to get it back. They said "Even if it was Paul McCartney he would have to wait in line" That totally turned me off to their guitars. I did tell them that I actually do play music and make a semi living at it. My Alvarez Yiari is 14 years old and NEVER had one problem. Even to this day. Alvarez Yiari next!

Likes:  If all the other guitar makers are trying to capture that Martin sound, why not just buy a Martin and get the sound.  I love the workmanship on this guitar, beautiful piece of Indian Rosewood on back and matching sides.  It's a 2001 so sound is just starting to hit me.  Seems like it's sounding better every day.  For those who have just bought one, or are ready to buy, look forward to a great sound in five or six years.

Nice balance.  Good bottom end for that authentic bluegrass run.

Dislikes:  Here's the thing.  I've owned lots of good guitars before but this is the first guitar that I've had to really watch the humidity of its environment.  With the scalloped bracing and thinner piece of spruce on the top, combined with medium strings (for bluegrass punch)BE CAREFUL.  Get yourself a humidity guage and keep it between 45 and 50 per cent at all times or you will regret it.

Saddle had to be compensated as string lengths were off from the factory.  Replaced plastic nut and saddle with bone.  Frets wear quickly (had to replace first seven frets and used Jim Dunlop fret wire because it is heavier and does not wear as fast).

Additional Comments:  I should have asked for the regular case instead of the plastic one - I find the aluminum edging warps.  Trick is to keep it closed and latched even if the guitar is out of the case.

Also, the Martin emblem scrolled into the case is like a be sign that says "steal me!"

Like about the Martin HD-28:  Exclusive sound, every note is standing.  Gives me that incredible C,S,N & Y sound for a far lower price than the D-45 or the CSN Gerry Tolman signature.  For fingerpicking with other fingerpickers this one gives both, brilliant high and low.

Dislike about the Martin HD28:  This beautiful guitar deserves a better (vintage-looking) hard shell wooden case in spite of the delivered plastic one.  Action is a bit high out of the box.  We had to lower the bridge a little bit.

Additional Comments:  Has become my music partner for writing new songs.

Like about the Martin HD-28:  Just bought the HD-28, love the solid feel it gives.  The neck shape takes a bit to get used to but once I did I loved it, it fills out my hand beautifully.  Very nice low-end sound. (because of the price I am being very picky, a lesser price guitar with the same sound/action would be rated as near perfect, although this definitely is close).  Herringbone trim is amazing, lots of little things I could go on forever about it.  I can't wait to age right alongside my new HD-28 as it will only open up more and sound better every time I pick it up.

Dislike about the Martin HD28:  Action is a tad bit high out of the box.  High-end tones seem to be a bit difficult to bring out.  I'm hoping they will eventually "loosen up" with age.  Mid-range is somewhere between the high and low-end sound quality but I'm expecting it to improve drastically with age and proper care (becasuse of the price of the guitar I am being very picky about things that would be otherwise rated as excellent with a lesser priced guitar).

Additional Comments:  I love this guitar and I think I have finally found "the one" I will keep for the rest of my life.

Like about the Martin HD28:  It was set up perfect. The sound is great being only a few weeks old.

Dislike about the Martin HD-28:  The satin finish on the neck.

Additional Comments:  Overall I am very impressed with the guitar and Maury's Music. Thanks!

Like about the Martin HD-28:  The finish.  The balanced tone throughout.  Like the aroma of the wood and varnish

Dislike about the Martin HD-28:  Having to be so careful with it as it is so amazingly well made and presented.  Here in New Zealand it is considered rare and endangered so I'll have to spend more time protecting it.

Additional Comments:  I've had a few Martins ( 4 ) in my time and this one would have to be one of the best.  The factory case is much lighter than the old heaver ones.

Like about the Martin HD-28:  The sound!  I grew up lisetning to bluegrass music.  Although my style is diffrent now I still love a deeper voiced guitar and this guitar is all I could ever ask for.  Deep bass and still blending with mids and trebs very nicely.  wonderful sustain and very easy to play.  also beautiful without over adornment.

Dislike about the Martin HD28:  MMMMMMM... nothing!

Additional Comments:  Bought new.  Played several other high end Martins this one stood out so I would recomend playing before buying to make sure it's what you want.  I did take the saddle down 1/32.

Like about the Martin HD28:  Excellent tone, projection and set up straight out of the box.  I didn't have to change anything.

Dislike about the Martin HD-28:  I have small hands & would prefer a thinner neck. End pin was quite difficult to insert.

Additional Comments:  I see why all other dreadnaughts are compared to this model.  It is beautiful without being gaudy.

Like about the Martin HD28:  This thing blows an ovation away, maybe just personal preference, but in my opinions ovations smell (bad)in other words they stink plastic back and sides, come on!?!?

Dislike about the Martin HD-28:  Price would like to see these come down a bit in price but hey, it will last a life time if taken care of.

Additional Comments:  I have been playing guitar for 14years and have owned over 40 guitars. Honestly I love the entire martin line.even the "little martin" has an enormous sound for the size and plenty of bass tone.

Like about the Martin HD-28:  Excellent sound - deep base and "tingly" highs held together with accented midss light, sturdy, feels good.

Dislike about the Martin HD-28:  Action is high out of the box. Had it set up but started buzzing.

Additional Comments:  I had an Ovation before this and from a sound/projection point of view, kicks butt. From an playability point of view, similar to the Ovation with the nect being slightly deeper in profile.

Rating:  5 - Best thing I ever bought

Like about the Martin HD-28:  Sustain, big bottom, bright top, ease of play (didn't even notice at first that those are medium strings!), as well as the look and feel of this great instrument.

Dislike about the Martin HD-28:  The case could be a little sturdier.

Additional Comments:  There is a reason why every other guitar is measured against Martin, and maybe even this model.
