Martin D-28 2016 vs 2017

Maury compares the 2016 Martin D-28 with the new, updated 2017 version.  Which do you prefer & why?  The 2016 version is built with standard X-bracing, has a black pickguard and a 1 11/16" nut.  For 2017, Martin revamped the D-28.  Notable changes include a 1 3/4" nut, a faux tortoise pickguard, aging toner, and forward-shifted non-scalloped braces!  For more information on these or any great Martin Guitars, please contact us today!

I'm hearing much clearer note separation on the 2017.

I agree with Craig Burgess... The 2016 sounds muffled, or muddy, compared to the 2017.

Interesting, I hear the exact opposite. 2016 is way clearer.

The 2016 is more balanced then the 2017 also the tone is sweeter and fatter when you lean into it the 2017 sounds harsh.i own a Martin 2013 d28 and think it sounds better then both of them . I think Chris Martin made an executive mistake to make changes for change sake.

I bought the 2018 Martin OM-28 and have been very pleased with how this guitar sounds, feels, and looks. For being an orchestra model,I am extremely impressed with the tone compared to my 2016 D-28 which was a dud. This OM-28 is a canon!!! Projects loudly, looks good as hell, and fits like a glove everytime I pick it up. If you're considering a 2018 standard Martin guitar you won't go wrong with any of them. I'm glad I chose the OM-28, it truly is a fine guitar to own and play.

I prefer standard x-bracing any day over forward shifted x-bracing for one good reason, high strings are compromised. Forward shifting equals (good bye) to that crisp sound that Martin has been known for!
