The Martin D-45 vs the Reimagined 2018 D-45

(L to R) older version D-45, 2018 D-45

Maury compares the older style Martin D-45 to the new Reimagined 2018 D-45.  Much of the D-45 remains unchanged, but there are some key differences.

The older version features:

  • scalloped braces
  • 1 11/16” nut
  • enclosed tuning machines
  • clear gloss finish
  • bright white binding

The new REIMAGINED 2018 D-45 features:

  • forward-shifted scalloped braces
  • 1 3/4” nut
  • open back tuning machines
  • aged toner (vintage yellow tint)
  • antique white binding (slightly yellowed)

Which do you prefer & why?  Post your comments below.

2018 for both fingerstyle and strumming. Way more clarity of the upper range!

Everything is good except the aging toner. What happens when there is actual aging under the aging toner? I dunno. It's a real concern.

I have not seen the re-imaged Martins, but looking at the pics of the two side by side, the re-imaged version is a bit too yellow for my taste. Having said that, I would still consider buying the re-imaged D45 if it was at a bargain price. I have a D41 Special and a J40 that sound really nice. I don't think I could hear thousands of dollars difference in those I have versus a D45.
